Online Courses to Learn About Sustainability (with certification) - Coursera

Sustainability , climate change and environmental studies has been a growing topic of study in the recent times, because of the importance it has on the future of mankind. Along with this a lot of people, students may not have in-depth knowledge about the technicalities, causes and consequences of climate change. Climate change is being studied in various ways - it is important for those in public policy roles, for data analysts, engineers, public officials, entrepreneurs and for citizens of the world in general because of the universal impact that it has.

There are a lot of universities and programs which are offering online courses on this topic at affordable rates or for free , and they even give you a certificate for this.

Some people may find it slightly tedious to explore the most relevant courses on this topic, which are taught by good universities. So, here I have made this task simple and found a list of courses for you to explore.

1.Global Warming I -The science of modelling and climate change offered by University of Chicago:

This course teaches you about the science of global warming and the forecast of what was mankind's impact on the Earth’s climate. It can be understood by an audience without much scientific background but a healthy sense of curiosity. The course brings together insights and perspectives across different fields of study such as from physics, chemistry, biology, earth and economics. It requires simple mathematics and algebra basics.

The topics covered are : the first climate model ,study of the heating of the atmosphere and green house gases, weather and climate, the carbon cycle , impact of climate change on humans and mitigation of this human impact.

Total hours to complete : 40-47 hours

Language : English

Shareable certificate will be awarded from the University Of Chicago on completion and after getting passing grades

2.Global Warming II -The science of modelling and climate change offered by University of Chicago:

This course is for those people who want to go into the analytics segment of the sustainability initiative and learn how to develop complex models.

It provides a series of Python programming exercises and you can thus explore the segment of numerical modeling in the Earth system . This course assumes that are a novice to Python and can even teach you the basics of Python ( good for those just learning the analytics bit).

The topics covered are : Time-dependent energy balances models, Ice-albedo feedback model, Ice sheet dynamics, pressure flow, model of climate changes today.

Total hours to complete : 35-37hours

Language: English

Shareable certificate will be awarded from the University Of Chicago on completion and after getting passing grades

You will track this process in four Latin American countries - Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Peru, and South Africa. You will hear from various professionals about their contexts and the different challenges and opportunities the process includes. The approach consists of a facilitated process whereby academic researchers and high-level influential actors within society co-produce knowledge

The topics covered are : facilitation process techniques, energy modeling, scenario building, innovation and policy making. You will have the opportunity to respond to these topics with ideas and reflection from your own context

Total hours to complete : 21 hours
